4 Creative Ways to Use Your Backyard

These days, activities that once only happened indoors have transported themselves to the great outdoors. One of the lessons many of us will carry forward long after the pandemic abates will be the many ways we have learned to take advantage of our own backyard.

If you’re not already maximizing your home’s outdoor space, consider one of these great ideas for turning the inside out:

A natural backdrop for video calls. Whether you’re FaceTiming your mom or taking part in a work-related Zoom call, do it outside. The natural setting created by your yard’s living landscape—trees, flowers, bushes, etc.—provides a winning background and saves you from having to tidy up your indoor setting before a call.

An outdoor classroom. Virtual learning has been tough on students and teachers alike. Give your mind a break and your motivation a boost by moving the classroom outside. Taking an online class underneath a shady tree or doing your homework on the patio table gives you a refreshing way to approach learning. What’s more, your yard is the perfect laboratory for studying plants, flowers, insect and animal life, weather, astronomy and more.

A green spa. The healing power of nature is only a few steps away when you head to your backyard. Let stress melt away as you swing in a hammock. Clear your mind with a few breaths of fresh air. Meditate to the sounds of nature. Do yoga to the soundtrack of songbirds. Make your lawn your exercise mat. Your yard is the perfect, always accessible, spa getaway.

A perfect event space. The pandemic made traditional celebrations and gatherings challenging, but the backyard often came to the rescue. From small-scale weddings to graduation parties, family reunions, birthday celebrations, holiday gatherings and more, the backyard is the perfect place to connect with family and friends.

To make the most of your home’s outdoor space, be sure to keep up with lawn and garden maintenance, and keep outdoor furniture, decks and porches in good shape with regular cleaning and refinishing. This will help ensure your yard is ready for anything, from a nap on the porch to a family celebration.
